Why Words/Matter

Why is this blog called “Words/Matter”?

And what’s with the backslash?

Let me explain: we’ve all heard of the refrain ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’. This is really it in a nutshell. What I’ve come to realise is that even the most seasoned communication and engagement practitioners often don’t really understand why it is the case that a writing implement could become more powerful than an instrument of war.

Which brings us to words/matter. Advances in the social sciences, together with advances in the psycho-cognitive and neurological sciences, have come to realise more and more that communication, in all its forms, does not merely reflect and convey our worlds to each other, but actively ‘constructs’ those worlds. Hence, words (as the basic building blocks of communication and interpretation) not only matter, words in many respects become matter.

This concept is the core premise at the heart of this blog – and I hope you’ll join me for my meanderings through our media-led social realities, to explore just how much words do, and are, matter. I will be posting┬áhere starting in August 2015. For admin reasons, we won’t be accepting comments, but if you’d like to get in touch, please use the email form.
